Rovi's Global Licensing Program Extends Reach in Australia

Company Release - 10/7/2009 8:30 AM ET

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and SYDNEY, Australia, Oct. 7, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq:ROVI) and Freeview Australia today announced that Freeview has entered into a multi-year cooperation agreement for interactive program guide (IPG) patents owned by Rovi.

The agreement allows Freeview to develop an enhanced IPG for the Australian market under the Rovi patent portfolio. Consumer electronic manufacturers incorporating the Freeview IPG will be able to license the necessary IPG patents directly from Rovi.

"As part of our commitment to offer more choice, more channels and more quality programming, we are now also able to offer the benefits of an IPG based on Rovi's patent portfolio, helping contribute to an even better viewing experience," said Robin Parkes, CEO of Freeview Australia.

Freeview brings its viewers more choice and more channels for free, including a 24 hour sports channel on ONE, more world stories on SBSTWO, and a new entertainment channel on GO!

"Freeview's mission underscores the significance that the digital transformation in free-to-view programming in Australia has provided to home entertainment," said Samir Armaly, senior vice president, licensing, Rovi Corporation. "Freeview brings cutting-edge technologies to its viewers and we are pleased that our intellectual property will be available for license by Freeview's customers, helping viewers discover the TV programs that are most important to them."
